Welcome to Global education Northwest. thank you for taking the time to look over the site and to read a little bit about How we help teachers and their students become more globally competent. my name is Ben Dotson and I have been teaching high school for more than 11 years in a low income, highly diverse Urban School in Tacoma, Washington. in the years that I've been teaching I always wanted to offer opportunities for my students to get out and see the world. However, as we are a school of nearly 80% free and reduced lunch, it was financially difficult if not impossible for most of our students to afford International trips. so I said about finding ways of fundraising in creating an expensive, but meaningful Adventures for our students.
Over the years I have been blessed with having an agricultural program that can support the student opportunities through are annual plant sale. however, knowing that those funds won't always be available, I knew that there needed to be other ways to generate Revenue so our kids can continue to travel. I said about looking for intermediary programs that can help connect our students to travel programs abroad and financially support them. to my dismay, I discovered that very few programs like this exist, and none that I could find on the West Coast. In the summer of 2017 I was awarded a teachers for Global classrooms Fellowship sponsor through the US Department of State. through this program I've been able to refine my pedagogy in addressing global issues through class work and an international field experience to Senegal. I hope to use this knowledge to help teachers understand and apply global competencies in other disciplines . . .
