Making Learning AuthenticHaving authentic experiences can help students make connections from their learning experiences. Reading about and walking into the Roman Colosseum are two very different experiences. Students are able to touch the stones, see the cages and passage ways, and imagine what life would have been like.

Taking Action for Global CompetencyWhen talking about the 4 domains of global competency, we learned that the 4th, and possibly most critical step, is to take action. Student travel is one dramatic, yet tangible, action that a student can take to improve their global competency. Students can talk to other students from the area they are visiting and understand some of the cultural influences they have to deal with. They can make sense of the complexities of another culture and learn how to communicate those complexities to others (3rd domain). Traveling alone does not make a student globally competent, but with the right preparation and structure, it can eliminate the preconceptions that permeate all of us.
